Meet The Artist -Nigel Scanlon
Nigel's journey as an artist began in a profoundly spiritual and emotional setting. During a visit to his marae near Arahoho cemetery, Nigel found himself too shy to join a meeting and instead wandered to his grandparents' graves. There, he discovered a rock with a chisel and hammer by its side, seemingly left for him. He began chiseling the rock, creating his first sculpture—a half-profile face that a local elder remarked resembled Nigel's Koro.
This experience marked a turning point in Nigel's life, instilling in him a deep connection to his art and heritage. From that day forward, he has continually honed his craft, working on basalt, granite, jade and limestone projects. His carvings serve as a medium for expressing his emotions and personal stories, many of which reflect the struggles and triumphs of his family life.
